A table two minutes from the Basilica
La Piazza has stood a few steps from Piazza San Marco since 2003: a family restaurant with three rooms, tables on the street when the weather is kind, and a kitchen that runs from eleven in the morning until midnight.
The cooking is Venetian and Italian. Adriatic fish and whole baked branzino, cacio e pepe finished at the table, pizza including gluten-free, and meat from the grill. Lunch between two churches, an early dinner before a concert, or a long evening upstairs. Whatever the hour, the kitchen is on.
The signatureCacio e Pepe
Tonnarelli in a pecorino fonduta, with black pepper ground to order. Three ingredients, no margin for error, and nothing to hide behind. It is finished at your table, so the pasta reaches you at the moment it should.
The oldest test of an Italian kitchen, and the dish we would ask you to judge us on.

The kitchen
What we cook
A Venetian kitchen with an Italian range around it. Short enough that everything on it is made properly, wide enough that a table of six with different appetites all eat well.
Adriatic seafood
Fish, whole and by weight
Our house speciality is the branzino al forno, sea bass baked with purple potatoes, pine nuts and cherry tomatoes. Alongside it: grilled cuttlefish with polenta, the gran frittura Ducale, tuna in a pistachio crust, and the Adriatic mixed grill for two.
Pasta and risotto
Roman and Venetian classics
Cacio e pepe in a pecorino fonduta. Carbonara alla romana. Paccheri with local lobster, tonnarelli allo scoglio, spaghettoni in cuttlefish ink, risotto with scampi and saffron. Ravioli with speck and gorgonzola.
From the grill
Meat, properly cooked
Black angus entrecôte and fillet, fillet in Barolo, New Zealand lamb cutlets, and a tomahawk sold by weight and usually shared. Piedmontese beef tartare cut by knife.
Pizza
Served all day, gluten-free included
We serve pizza every day alongside the pasta and the fish, on the same menu and at the same hours, from 11:00 to midnight. We also keep gluten-free bases, so a coeliac guest orders a pizza like everyone else at the table rather than sitting it out.
Vegetarian and vegan
Not an afterthought
Burrata pugliese with tricolore tomatoes, caprese with buffalo mozzarella, mezzelune filled with cheese and porcini, a broccoli velouté with burrata, and side dishes from grilled vegetables to steamed cauliflower and broccoli.
Gluten-free
Pasta and pizza, not just salad
We keep gluten-free pasta and gluten-free pizza bases, so a coeliac guest eats the same dishes as everyone else at the table. Please tell us when you book and the kitchen will have both ready for you.
What it costs
Prices, published
Starters run from €17 to €35. Pasta and risotto from €15 to €35. Fish main courses €25 to €29, meat main courses €27 to €42. Salads €18, side dishes €9. Two courses come to roughly €40 to €60 per person before drinks.
Every price, published.
Our full menu is online with the price beside every dish, so you can decide before you sit down rather than after.
Close to Piazza San Marco that is worth checking wherever you eat. Under Veneto law a restaurant must display a priced menu legible from the street, so you are entitled to read one before you take a table.
Where to sit
Three rooms, three evenings
Outside. Tables on the street when the weather allows, which in Venice means most of the year. The tables that fill first.
The ground floor. The main dining room, and the busier of the two.
The second floor. Quieter, away from the street. Good for a longer dinner, a conversation you actually want to have, or a group who would rather have their own space. It can be given over entirely as a private dining room.
Timing
When to come
Our kitchen runs continuously from 11:00 to midnight, so you are not tied to Italian service hours. That is more useful in San Marco than it sounds.
From 11:00, lunch onwards
We open at 11:00 every day, earlier than most kitchens in Venice, and serve from the moment we do. Useful if you have been up since the first vaporetto.
Mid-afternoon, 15:00 to 18:00
The quietest hours, and much of Venice is closed. Come straight from the Basilica or the Doge's Palace and eat a full meal, not a sandwich.
Early evening, from 19:00
The room fills. Book ahead between Easter and October, and on any weekend.
Late, up to midnight
After a concert at La Fenice, or a long walk back from Rialto. The kitchen is still on.
Holidays and festivals
We open on public holidays, including Christmas and New Year's Eve. Those and the Redentore weekend in July are the busiest nights of our year and always need a booking.
San Marco 615
Finding the door
The most useful landmark is the church of San Zulian, about 25 metres from us, on the Mercerie side between Piazza San Marco and the Rialto. If you have reached San Zulian, you have reached us.
Three to four minutes on foot from the square, with no bridge to cross. Allow longer between 11:00 and 16:00 in summer: Venice walking times depend far more on the crowd than on the metres. Lost? Call us and we will talk you in. It happens constantly and we do not mind.
